The new index of Tripadvisor has revealed the most popular destination for American travelers during the winter season. The Winter Travel Index shows where many Americans travel on winter holidays.
According to the first-party site data and a customer opinion analysis, the final installment of the Tripadvisor Travel Index for 2021 implies that 50 percent of Americans are planning to travel this winter despite Covid travel restrictions.
The side-by-Side comparison indicates that this year’s number has gone up from 50 percent who traveled during the same season in 2020, but below the 63 percent who did so in 2019.
The Index also reveals that 24 percent of American travelers are still skeptical about winter travel this year — with about one-third [30 percent] having already booked their trips, but approximately 74 percent waiting to do so late November or early December.
Even with the current statistics, the large majority of American travelers [94 percen] are not going on a trip outside the U.S. However, over 30 percent of these travelers will head to a destination they’ve never visited before, and 42 percent have already booked a tour or activity.

Tripadvisor reported a change from the coastal destinations that were trending in its Fall Travel Index — Honolulu, Myrtle Beach, and Virginia Beach, toward larger and more populous cities.
Additional trend variations from those seen in the fall bookings comprise an increased interest from Americans in traveling overseas, probably in response to the reopening of more international borders to U.S. travelers.
Most of the fastest-growing destinations since the publication of the Fall Travel Index are international ones.
