Radio personality, George Quaye has asked critics to cut President Akufo-Addo some slack because he weighed all options before considering lifting the ban on movement in some parts of Greater Accra and Kumasi.
President Akufo-Addo during his address to the nation today, Sunday, April 19, 2020, lifted the three week restrictions imposed on the movement of persons within some parts of the country.
Addressing the nation in a televised broadcast, the President said the decision which takes effect from Monday, April 20, follows achievements made with aggressive contact tracing and enhanced testing capacities which have made it possible to contain the spread in Ghana.
There were several reactions to the news by some sections of the public on social media. While a majority of the citizens are excited about the ban, some half believe that the rise in persons who have tested positive for the virus( which now stands at 1,0420) indicate the need for an extension of the lockdown.
Reacting to the various comments of social media in a Facebook Post this morning, George Quaye stated that the President is not an idiot and made his decision based on a lot of deep thought and debates.
“It’s always easy to question a decision from the comfort of an armchair. Our president is not an idiot and he is not surrounded by airheads. I’m pretty sure a lot of deep thought, debates, conversations, arguments and counter-arguments went into the decision to ‘unlock’ the ‘lockdown,” he wrote.
He also added that people should take safety protocols seriously and stay at home if there’s no need to go out.
As mentioned in one of his addresses (if I am not mistaken), your front door is your personal frontline hero in this battle against COVID-19. If you have nothing doing in town, please #stayhome! If you need to step out, please follow all the safety protocols and wear a face mask! If your employer insists you come to work, ensure he’s also made the environment safe. If he hasn’t, invest in your own safety! Your safety is your priority. The lockdown has been unlocked. Let’s kick Ghana’s economic motor into motion again, please. Bonjour GH!” he added.
